2011 Meeting Summary
Over 320 scholars attended the meeting on March 4-6 at the Marriott Hotel DFW. Keynote speakers included Kwok Pui-Lan, Professor of Christian Theology and Spirituality at Episcopal Divinity School and Richard Bauckham, Professor Emeritus at St. Andrews University.
At its business meeting, the SWCRS honored three individuals. Mackenzie Brown, Trinity University, received the John G. Gammie Distinguished Scholar Award. Mark Dennis, Texas Christian University, and Sharon Betsworth, Oklahoma City University, received Junior Scholar Grants.
2010 Meeting Summary
Approximately 302 professors, scholars, and students participated in the 2010 annual meeting of the SWCRS, held March 13-15 at the Marriott Hotel DFW Airport North. Although the total number of registrations were down about 15%, quality of the conference was high. Several members left survey comments indicating that 2010 was the best conference ever. Professors James Kugel, Chair of the Institute for History of the Jewish Bible at Bar Ilan, and Ann Taves, Virgil Cordano OFM Endowed Chair in Catholic Studies at UCSB, served as keynote speakers. A workshop for graduate students focused on information and advice for students of color who are considering the pursuit of doctoral studies in religion or theology. The workshop was sponsored by the Fund for Theological Education, the SWCRS, AAR-SW, and SBL-SW.
At the annual SWCRS reception, outgoing president Jeffrey Bingham announced Dr. Michael Homan (Xavier University) as the 2010-2011 Junior Scholar awardee. The program for the conference is available at this link.
2009 Meeting Summary
A total of 336 persons registered for the March 2009 meeting, which was held at the Marriott Hotel DFW North. Among these registrants, 174 were member faculty, and 128 were students. By organization, 117 were AAR members, 168 SBL, 25 ASOR, and 22 ASSR. Plenary addresses featured Dr. Carol A. Newsom, Charles Howard Candler Professor of Old Testament at Emory University, and Dr. Mark Juergensmeyer, Director of the Orfalea Center for Global and International Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
Exhibitors, using 28 tables, included Abingdon Press, American Bible Society, Baker Publishing Group, Baylor University Press, Continuum/T&T Clark, Eisenbrauns, Fortress Press, Hendrickson Publishers, InterVarsity Press, Society of Biblical Literature, Wipf and Stock Publishers, Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing, and Zondervan.
At the annual reception, outgoing SWCRS President Nadia Lahutsky (Texas Christian University) announced the SWCRS board's awarding of a Junior Scholar Grant to Prof. Michael Martin (Lubbock Christian University). Lahutsky also announced the 2009-2010 SWCRS officers:
