The AAR traces its beginnings to 1909, when Professor Ismar J. Peritz and three colleagues founded the Association of Biblical Instructors in American Colleges and Secondary Schools, which held its first program the following year. In 1964 the organization was incorporated under the current name (AAR). The Southwest Region of AAR (AAR-SW) has met in Dallas since 1980.

Founded in 1900, the purpose of the ASOR is to support and encourage the study of the peoples and cultures of the Near East, from the earliest times to the present. The organization also has independent overseas institutes in Cyprus, Israel, and Jordan.

The SBL was founded in 1880, and is a member of the American Council of Learned Societies. The organization has over 6,000 members worldwide. The purpose of the organization is to provide conversation partners and resources for those interested in the religions, history, literature, and culture of the ancient Near Eastern world.
